How to Tell If a Tooth Is Cracked

How to Tell If a Tooth Is Cracked
A cracked tooth is not always easy to identify right away. Some cracks are visible. Many are not. Patients often notice symptoms first, especially pain when biting, sensitivity that comes and goes, or discomfort that feels difficult to explain.
That is why cracked teeth are often confusing. The tooth may not look obviously broken, but it still does not feel right.
Common Cracked Tooth Symptoms
Common cracked tooth symptoms include:
- pain when biting down
- sharp pain when releasing pressure
- sensitivity to cold
- pain that comes and goes
- a rough edge or visible line in the enamel
- swelling around one specific tooth in more severe cases
Cracks can happen for several reasons:
- chewing something very hard
- grinding or clenching
- an old large filling weakening the tooth
- trauma
- long-term wear
The reason cracks matter so much is that they tend to worsen, not improve. A small structural weakness may eventually become a more significant fracture if the tooth keeps taking force without protection.
Treatment depends on how deep the crack is. Some teeth can be protected with a dental crown. Others may need root canal therapy if the crack or damage has affected the nerve. In the most severe cases, the tooth may not be salvageable.
This is one of those problems where waiting is rarely helpful. If the tooth already feels unstable or painful, delaying treatment often allows more damage to occur.
At Silver State Smiles, we use exams and imaging to determine whether the crack is superficial, structural, or something more advanced. The earlier the issue is identified, the more options patients usually have.
